Our PTA only works because of volunteers, and helping just got easier. The district updated its volunteer rules for 2026-27, and most one-time helpers no longer need fingerprinting or a TB test at all.

Pick the one that sounds like you. That's the only checklist you need to read.
I just want to attend events (Back to School Night, BikePHE scanner, Carnoween volunteer, Multicultural Night, PTA meetings). You're a Visitor. No paperwork, no clearance. Just show up!
I can help once or twice a year (go on a field trip, Fun Run lap counter, Book Fair, help at a class party, Dino Dollar store, Field Day). You're a Level 1 volunteer. One short form and your photo ID. No fingerprints, no TB test, no training.
I want to help regularly (weekly classroom volunteering or leading on-site programs like BikePHE or Dino Dollar store). You're a Level 2 volunteer. One-time fingerprinting, a TB clearance every 4 years, and a free online training once a year.
I can drive students (certain upper grade field trips). You're a Level 3 volunteer. Everything in Level 2, plus driver paperwork.

Fill out the Limited Volunteer Information Form.

Bring the form and a valid photo ID to the PHE front office. The school takes it from there.
That's it. No fingerprinting, no TB test, no training. Level 1 covers up to two events per school year, always with school staff present.

Get fingerprinted (once, ever)
If you've ever been fingerprinted for MDUSD, you're already done. Skip this step. Otherwise, print the LiveScan Request Form and bring it with a photo ID to any LiveScan location (at your own expense). Keep a copy or photo of your completed form. The PTA sometimes hosts on-campus fingerprinting, and we can help if cost is a barrier. Email phepta94523@gmail.com.Get TB clearance (every 4 years)
Easiest way: come to one of our free TB screening events during the year, where PHE parent nurses complete the risk assessment questionnaire on the spot. Watch the newsletter or email us for the next date. Or ask your doctor; a questionnaire often replaces the skin test, and if you do need a skin test, allow 48 hours for the reading. Your clearance must be dated within 60 days of your application.Take the Mandated Reporter Training (once a year)
New this year under state law (SB 848). It's free, online, and done from your couch. Go to the MDUSD SafeSchools training site, create an account with registration key mdusd, and complete the course "Mandated Reporter: Child Abuse and Neglect." Complete the Level Two Volunteer Application. Have photos or scans of your TB clearance, training certificate, and completed LiveScan form ready to upload. Our school principal approves your application, then district HR finishes your clearance. Fingerprint results from the DOJ can take 1 to 30 days, so start a few weeks before you'd like to begin.Join a quick orientation

Complete the annual Mandated Reporter Training (step 3 above) and keep your certificate.
Make sure your TB clearance is current (it's good for 4 years).
The training is required each year before you volunteer, starting July 1, 2026. It only takes one sitting, so knock it out now and you're set for the year.
